Day 1: A Long Day at JFK

 Well, we are off. Jeff Wang picked us up at 5:15 AM, and after fussing with the sprinkler system, which was malfunctioning, we raced off to the Minneapolis airport. Our flight to New York was uneventful, but we faced a 12 hour layover at JFK. 

So we decided to splurge. We spent $39 each to get into Delta‘s sky club, and it was well worth it. Free food and drink, including alcohol, all day long. Lots of comfortable seating and ports for our computers and phones 

Poor Phil. He has inherited the Dutch tendency to take as much free stuff as possible. So he was irresistibly drawn to the long counter filled with delicacies, including Middle Eastern chicken, rice, four different kinds of soups, bread, etc. You can see this made him very happy.




It also made him very full and sleepy.

The day is rainy and stormy, probably due to Hurricane Ian. 

However, planes keep going in and out, so I have no doubt we will fly overnight to Portugal and then to Amsterdam as planned. In the meantime, the liquor bar is a very popular place. Who doesn’t like free alcohol?




And now we are waiting interminably for our 11:00 PM flight to board. We are flying Portugal airlines, which promises to be an experience. I will let you know if we think it’s worth repeating.

Day 7: Venice: Magnificence and Decay

 Today I should just post pictures; I am not up to the task of describing Venice. But I will say that I woke this morning with a sore throat, fatigue, and brain fog. Not a great way to start a once-in-a-lifetime tour of Venice. Luckily Phil took over, finding bus information, leading the way, making sure I had what I needed. After a couple of aspirin I felt better and was glad I had not stayed at the hotel. We bought three-day passes that are good on bus and also water transportation in Venice. A great deal. The bus ride from our hotel is about half an hour, over the bridge from the mainland to the actual island city of Venice (disappointingly, our hotel is on the mainland). Day 4: Walking the Canals and Amsterdam History

 Today was beautiful—sunlight, warmth, beauty, and no specific agenda. Here’s what we did: Getting off the #7 tram at Frederiksplein, we walked along the canals to the Amsterdam Museum, reveling in the blue skies and perfect weather. (This promises to be our only sunny day on this trip.) We both felt more spring in our step than yesterday, and the play of light on water was like poetry. Houses along the Amstel River, just past Prinsengracht ( gracht = canal). A fountain in Frederiksplein on our way to the museum. The Prinsengracht continuing past the Amstel. We chose the Amsterdam Museum because the guide book said it had a marvelous presentation of Amsterdam’s history. We did not realize that it was being housed in a temporary location, with most of its original displays in storage. The history portion of the museum was paltry, to put it mildly. Day 6: Vondel Park, central Amsterdam, and Venice!

 We had had enough of museums, so today was a walk in the park—Vondel Park, one of the largest in Amsterdam, with lots of walking trails, water, and green space. What a pleasure to walk there after the noisy bustle and crowds of people on buses, in museums and restaurants. The pictures say more than I can: We ate lunch in the park, watched the many dogs frisk and play (great to see them run!), and found a bench on which to read our books. The most relaxing day on our trip. I have to add some pictures of clouds. We’ve seen so many Dutch landscape paintings where the clouds dominate and have a surreal, ethereal quality. I thought it was painterly imagination until I saw that there is a different quality to the light, perhaps due to water vapor in the air coming off the sea.
